Movement is Medicine: Transform Your Arthritis Pain with REPS Movement

11/05/2025

Living with arthritis can sometimes feel like being caught between two difficult choices: enduring pain when you move or losing mobility when you don't. But what if movement itself could be part of the solution?

Understanding Arthritis in Older Adults

Arthritis affects nearly half of all adults over 65, causing joint pain, stiffness, and often reducing mobility. While there are over 100 different types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are most common among seniors, gradually wearing down joint cartilage and causing inflammation that limits daily activities.

Debunking Exercise Myth

You may have heard "rest your joints if they hurt" or "exercise will make arthritis worse." These well-intentioned but outdated ideas have prevented many from experiencing the relief that appropriate movement can provide. In fact, modern research shows that regular, gentle exercise is one of the most effective non-medication

Our Approach to Arthritis Management

At REPS Movement, we offer multiple ways to help you manage arthritis pain:

  • Gym Membership: Access to our senior-friendly equipment and arthritis-specific exercise classes
  • One-to-One Sessions: Personalised training with our Exercise Physiologists who understand arthritis management
  • Pilates: Our specialised Pilates programs focus on core strength, postural alignment, and controlled movement—ideal for arthritis management
  • Yoga: Gentle, modified yoga classes that improve flexibility, balance and joint function while respecting your limitations
  • Therapeutic Massage: Combined with appropriate exercise, massage therapy can significantly reduce arthritis pain

How Movement Helps Manage Arthritis Pain

Regular, appropriate exercise offers multiple benefits for those living with arthritis:
  • Strengthens muscles surrounding affected joints, providing better support and stability
  • Maintains and improves joint flexibility and range of motion
  • Reduces inflammation and pain through improved circulation
  • Helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing pressure on weight-bearing joints

Specialised Programs for Arthritis Relief

While we offer various group programs, our experience shows that individualised one-to-one Exercise Physiology sessions provide the most significant benefits for arthritis management:

Personalised Exercise Physiology: Our Exercise Physiologists develop customised programs that address your specific type of arthritis, pain patterns, and functional limitations. This individualised approach ensures every movement is appropriate for your condition, maximising benefits while minimising discomfort. Many clients experience noticeable pain reduction and improved mobility after just a few personalised sessions.

Tailored Progression Plans: Unlike generic exercise classes, our one-to-one programs evolve as your condition changes. Your Exercise Physiologist will carefully monitor your progress, making adjustments to gradually increase strength and mobility at a pace that's right for you.

Comprehensive Education: During individual sessions, you'll learn specific techniques to manage pain flare-ups, proper body mechanics for everyday activities, and strategies to continue your progress at home.

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist can develop a personalised exercise program tailored to your specific type of arthritis, pain levels, and functional limitations. They can guide you on safe and effective exercises to manage your pain and improve your quality of life.
